April 09, 2018 CerebAir is the winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award 2018.

The Red Dot Jury has made their choice: Nihon Kohden´s CerebAir is the winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award 2018.

Rosbach v. d. Höhe, 9th of April 2018. Manufacturers and designers from 59 countries entered more than 6.300 current product innovations in the Red Dot Product Design Award 2018. Only products that convinced the 40 experts from all over the world with their high design quality were awarded in the annual competition. Nihon Kohden is proud to announce that CerebAir – a telemetry EEG amplifier designed by our engineers in Tomioka, Japan – received the Red Dot Product Design Award in the category “Life sciences and medicine”.

Design is more than just the external appearance of a product. Good designs convince people through their ease of use, high level of functionality, attractive appearance and compatibility with the environment. Now more than ever, it is design that determines whether or not a product will be successful. As with so many things, the key to success lies beneath the surface: “Good design is not defined merely by a product’s appearance. Instead, it is also expressed through technical innovations and the special touch and feel of a product which, when in harmony with each other, lead to a holistic product design”, explains Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award.

The origins of the Red Dot Design Award date back to 1955. Its distinction, the Red Dot, is established internationally as one of the most sought-after quality marks for innovative design. From products to communication projects and packaging, the Red Dot Award tracks the most prominent trends worldwide.

Every year independent designers, design professors and specialist journalists are appointed to the jury. They evaluate each individual product and award the Red Dot for high design quality and innovation. Thanks to their background, the experts assess the special intercultural aspects of design in a conscious manner, guaranteeing a judging process that determines the direction of the design strategies of manufacturers and designers across the globe.

This year we are proud to announce that Nihon Kohden´s CerebAir, designed by our engineers at the design center in Tomioka Japan, received the Red Dot Product Design Award in the category “Life sciences and medicine”. As one of the distinctive winners, Nihon Kohden is allowed to honour our innovative telemetry EEG amplifier with the renowned Red Dot Label.

The CerebAir EEG Headset is a telemetry EEG amplifier, developed for quick and easy cEEG monitoring, performed in a critical care setting. Patients with an unclear mental status in ICU are under-diagnosed, a need for technology and routine are two of the reasons. Now with CerebAir we offer innovative technology to enable cEEG for everyone, leading to increased clinical and financial outcome.

Takaya Arimitsu, the head of Nihon Kohden´s design center in Japan explains “The design combines ease of application with a feeling of solid reliability. Curved lines follow the contours of the patient’s skull and small dimensions are designed to avoid interference with other medical equipment attached to the patient’s head.” He mentions further “The headset’s flexible design allows the electrodes to be positioned correctly simply by placing the pad on the patient’s forehead. Disposable electrodes enable quick application without needing to prepare attachment sites first. EEG measurement data can be transmitted wirelessly using Bluetooth, which enables EEG to be measured in an ICU or emergency room without adding to the number of devices surrounding the patient.”

In order to internationally spread the idea of design, Red Dot regularly stops at design metropolises all around the globe and presents the awarded products within the framework of different exhibitions. Traditionally the honoured products and therefore Nihon Kohden´s CerebAir are presented to the visitors of the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in the exhibition “Design on Stage”. Starting with the award ceremony on Monday, 9th of July 2018, CerebAir will be presented in the exhibition and open for visitors.
